INTRODUCTION:

The Tanzania Roads Association (TARA), which is also a National Committee of the World Road Association (PIARC) under the Ministry of Works in Tanzania, in collaboration with the Tanzania Transportation Technology Transfer (TanT2) Centre, Tanzania National Roads Agency  (TANROADS), Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), the Roads Fund Board in Tanzania with other local and international institutions, is organizing the Africa Regional Seminar on “Building Climate Resilient Transport Infrastructures, Adapting Design of Existing Transport Infrastructures to a Changing Climate” to be held from 23rd  –  27th June 2025 at  Mount. Meru Hotel, Arusha Tanzania.

Africa Regional Seminar on “Building Climate- Resilient Transport Infrastructures, Adapting Design of Existing Transport Infrastructures to a Changing Climate” is designed to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the basic concepts and recent advances related to climate change and its impact on resiliency of the transport infrastructures. Participants will learn about recent developments in resilience of transport infrastructure pavements, bridges, culverts, drainage structures, and slope protection works due to the impacts of climate change stressors. Participants will be guided through various interactive modules to develop skills and knowledge to understand the basic knowledge and skills to evaluate different climate change factors and how they impact the performance of the transport infrastructure system.

Throughout this Africa Regional Seminar, the extreme weather events such as sea level rise, floods, hurricanes, and extreme heat, and their impacts on the transport infrastructures will be discussed. Advances in pavement resilience evaluation with regards to design and construction of climate resilient pavements, will also be addressed through dedicated modules for each topic. A special focus will be on accessing the vulnerability of pavements, resilient pavement design strategies, monitoring performance parameters, and pavement adaptation strategies.

SEMINAR OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the basic concepts of transport infrastructure resilience.
  • Become familiar with different climate stressors and extreme weather events (precipitation, flooding, extreme temperatures) that can impact the performance of transport infrastructures such as pavements of transport infrastructures (roads, airport runways), bridges, culverts, drainage structures, railway embankment, railway track, flooding of seashores and lakes and floods at airports etc
  • Understand the basic concepts of transport infrastructure performance parameters and evaluation methods
  • Understand the process for planning, design, maintenance and operation of resilient transport infrastructure systems (road pavements, bridges, culverts, drainage structures, slope protection works, updating of transport construction and maintenance standards, etc.)
  • Learn about adaptation strategies and vulnerability assessment frameworks.
  • Gain practical experience in employing transport infrastructures resiliency evaluation tools.
  • Learn about the advances and innovations in climate resilient transport infrastructures.
